My morning start with a small walk at my garden, cutting old leafs and picking up twigs. After I get my ever needed Vitamin D from the sunlight, my breakfast consist mainly of high-fiber and vitamin rich fruits.

However, since we are older, and we cannot complete our diet through food alone, doctors suggest that we should take some supplements. In my case, I take Centrum Silver. One tablet after breakfast. I eat some oatmeal and sometimes some high-fiber alternatives such as diabetamil. Quaker Oats is my oat of choice, I drop in some milk, and some sweetener. I don’t use refined sugar that much since raising your blood glucose level is bad for your health.

Fruits that are essential for grandparents like us are fruits rich in Vitamin C and Potassium. So, my fruit of choice are papayas and bananas. I sometime drop in some oranges and apples for variety. You should always have some variety with your food, so that you won’t get bored with the same set everyday.

One of the major tips of my doctor is to drink plenty of fluids. However, I was hesitant at first because I was irritated by having so many trips to the loo. But after several bouts of the stomach flu, and dehydration, I learned that urinating frequently as opposed to being hospitalized far outweighs the irritations I have with going to the ladies room frequently. I suggest you do the same and drink plenty of fluids. Water would be the best option.

I was a little too excited writing a blog. My son is trying to teach me the ropes, and although I am a weathered writer, I seem to be too amazed at how technology is bridging the gap in communication. I hope my Grandchildren will read this blog someday and learn that their Grandma cares for them and thinks about them all the time.

The excitement left me with spelling errors, and the whole blog is still under construction layout and graphic wise as my son said. He will be continually working to the best of his abilities to make my blog user-friendly and pleasing. So please excuse me if you will encounter some errors on the site, spelling errors, linking errors and the like. I am still learning the ropes, and who said “Old Dogs can’t Learn New Tricks” ?

One thing about getting old is our lack of energy, the many aches and pains and of course stiff muscles and brittle bones.

But do you know that a little bit of sunshine in the early morning can help ease our pain and anxiety about brittle bones?

Just 10-15 minutes of sunshine everyday is enough to furnish us with the needed Vitamin D for stronger bones and teeth. According to researchers and doctors, a lack of Vitamin D may cause certain diseases , even including certain cancers.

So, when soaking up Vit. D from the sun, remember to use sunscreen daily.

Sunscreens won’t reverse the aging process nor erase the signs of aging

but can help a lot in preventing further damage such as wrinkles and age spots.

It will help reduce further cellular damage. The sun can do worse fro some people.. It may lead to sun-induced symptoms including skin cancer.

Here’s hint: pick out sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, According to my dermatologist, they work by creating barriers against ultra A and B rays that can hasten aging.

To protect the skin further, use sunscreens even if you won’t go out in the sun. (SPF 15 )or higher is best.) It is also helpful to use sunscreen with moisturizer.

That is how we defy aging and look youthful even at our 60′s or 70′s So be aware that there are sunscreen products everywhere at different price ranges. Choose the best that goes well with your skin and use it daily.

One of the things grand moms must contend with is the generation gap. There is that fear of doing too much and too little. How would one balance the two different worlds divided by time, space and distance?

I see in the distance, our gaps getting wider, and how it pains me! We know in our minds and hearts that we must connect but how? Are letters and phone calls enough? What is too little and too much?

I write this blog to exchange ideas with other grandparents like me , who perhaps are in the same dilemma as mine. I believe that there is some way by which we can reach out into their future and make the grandparent-grandchildren relationship stronger.

What can grandparents do to connect with their grandchildren without getting too overwhelming? To try to influence some of their ideas without getting in the way? …without disturbing or disrupting their lives?

How will the grandchildren face it? Will we be “getting in the way?” Will they consider it a disruption of their lives?

The fifty-plus years between their ages and mine was something to reckon with… the difference between their energy level and mine is so huge! Yes, their world is utterly different from what I know.

The problem is how to bridge the distance –both physical, psychological and emotional. It seems as though I cannot communicate clearly with them . Is there some way that can easily build a bridge between their world and mine? This is the question I am still pondering now…

After a few years Ben came. The ever- smiling, roly- poly baby. His pictures were always fun to look at.

I keep a little picture of him in my wallet and showed it to all my friends. He was such a funny boy, always smiling in the pictures as if he will do something mischievous.

Soon he was able to talk and the moments we can talk on the telephone were events I always look forward to..He can sing nursery rhymes, memorize the alphabet and count from one to ten. Isn’t that precocious for a one-year-old? Just a proud, doting grandmother whose life now has become richer because of the three grandchildren.

Now I understand why other grandmothers do the same. Once, before my own grandchildren came, I used to be irritated by the other grandmas who bore me with tales of their own grandchildren. Now that I have three from my Sons, I understood what it was like.

That’s all i dreamed of until they came to visit. At last the beautiful Kaitlyn and her perky little brother Troy was here. So this is how it feels to be a grandmother! To hold this sweet little girl and cute little boy was heaven. Oh the sweet fragrance of the kids! I delighted in the few words she was able to utter!

The little boy Troy was quite a handful. He has such tremendous energy for a one and a half year old baby. just a toddler but boy can he run! It’s difficult to keep pace with him having such creaky joints and just one-tenth of his energy.

How we love to play with them, letting them run on t he beach. My days have never been brighter! having my grandchildren around was heaven! At the back of my mind though was “soon this will be over…they will go back to their own home and we can just connect with them through dreams and pictures.

Now that our children our grown up, the ever generous God gave us grandchildren to love and to take care of.

I remember my first granddaughter Kaitlyn. Such a beautiful little girl. I can’t seem to take my eyes off her picture. The more pictures my children sent me, the more time I spend looking at them- loving her and hoping to put my arms around her and kiss her. I know babies always smell wonderful…A mixture of milk and honey!
